Inlays and Onlays: The Middle Ground between Fillings and Crowns

Dr. John P. Krueger and his team provide high-quality inlays and onlays at their Clearwater, FL, office for patients in the Palm Harbor, FL, area. Also known as indirect fillings or partial crowns, these restorations are used when a dental filling cannot provide necessary support to repair damaged teeth, but a crown would be excessive. As with every restoration we provide, our inlays and onlays are custom-crafted to provide a precise fit and a natural appearance. During your dental examination, Dr. Krueger will determine the best treatment for your needs.

Am I a Good Candidate for Inlays or Onlays?

When damage from decay is too extensive for a dental filling, but not advanced enough for a dental crown, inlays and onlays may be the ideal restorative procedure for you. Inlays fill the space in between cusps, repairing your tooth after a pit or fissure cavity. Onlays, however, can replace one or more cusps, and can extend down the sides of the tooth.

To receive these restorations, you must have enough healthy tooth structure to support an inlay or onlay. As with any type of restorative procedure, patients should be willing to avoid sticky and crunchy foods as much as possible, and commit themselves to good oral hygiene regimens.

The Procedure

Placing inlays and onlays typically takes two appointments to complete. We begin by applying anesthetic to ensure your comfort during the procedure. Once you are fully numb, Dr. Krueger will remove the damaged and decayed tissue, and prepare your tooth to provide a stable foundation for your restoration. We will then take impressions of your tooth for our partner lab to create your highly customized inlay or onlay. It usually takes about two weeks for your restoration to be completed, during which time, we will provide you with a temporary.

At your second appointment we will gently remove your temporary restoration. Dr. Krueger will ensure that your inlay or onlay fits properly, maintaining your bite and alignment. After any necessary adjustments, he will securely bond your restoration in place, restoring your oral function and smile.

Dr. Krueger believes in conservative treatment, and recommends procedures that will preserve dental tissue whenever possible.

Benefits of Inlays and Onlays

Inlays and onlays provide several unique benefits. Compared to crowns, they are a conservative treatment, preserving more of your natural tooth structure. Inlays and onlays can also be ideal for treating decay in tight spaces, including cavities located between the teeth. These restorations are made of quality materials that will add further strength to your tooth that dental fillings cannot provide. In addition, with proper maintenance, inlays and onlays can last for up to 20 years or more.
